In 2001, the Flagstaff Mountaineers Unified Floor Hockey team was formed by Margoth Carrasquilla and Melissa Roe, fulfilling the need in Flagstaff for an adult unified team. The team started small with only six athletes and five partners. The first two sports they participated in were floor hockey and basketball. The Mountaineers now have grown to include 30+ athletes and partners. They participate at all five state competitions and compete in more than nine events. The team has also competed at the regional and national levels, and has sent one athlete to world games.
The Flagstaff Mountaineers were chosen in February 2008 to represent the United States at the 2009 Boise, Idaho Special Olympics Winter World Games in floor hockey. Sixteen athletes and partners were selected to go and are currently following a rigorous training schedule that includes practices, fitness nights and unique training opportunities.
