The Youth Activation Committee (YAC) is about activating youth to promote school communities where all young people are agents of change – fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities.

We support many programs including- Unified Sports, Spread the Word To End The Word, The Messenger Program, and the Be A Fan Campaign.  Details on each of these programs are below.  But most of all, we are the youth that leads Project UNIFY in Arizona and beyond.

What is Project UNIFY?
Project UNIFY is acceptance. Project UNIFY is unity. Project UNIFY is youth driven. Project UNIFY is friendship. Project UNIFY is fun.

Interested in Joining the YAC?

We are currently recruiting High School students from anywhere in Arizona, with and without intellectual disabilities.  If you would like to join, please complete the online application by following the link above.  Anyone who needs help on the application is welcome to work with a parent, teacher or friend.  You will receive a response to your application shortly.  If you are accepted we will provide you with important dates and other information that you will need.

What is the time commitment for YAC?

YAC members will be expected to spend approximately 10-20 hours per committee a month leading and supporting Project UNIFY.  Some students will devote more time than others, but we expect everyone to contribute in a meaningful way.  Meetings in Phoenix will be held at least once a month.  Other local meetings and conference calls will be conducted throughout the month.

YAC members will have the opportunity to serve on other Special Olympics committees and boards.  We want youth representation in everything we do!

How much travel will be required?

YAC members can be from anywhere in Arizona.  Therefore, significant travel time will be necessary for every YAC member.

We will do our best to accommodate everyone in ways to reduce travel.  For example students near Phoenix, Flagstaff and Tucson might conduct three separate monthly meetings.  On the other hand we want every member to recognize the importanceand fun of getting everyone together in one place.

We may have opportunities to travel out of Arizona, but this will never be mandatory.

Spread the Word to End the Word

Spread the Word to End the Word is a campaign to raise awareness of the hurtful effects of the word "retard(ed)" and encourage people to pledge to stop using it.  Many schools in Arizona have lead "Spread the Word to End the Word" Campaigns right on their campus!  Visit www.r-word.org to take the pledge today.  Campaign resources are available on the r-word website and a downloadable best practices documents can be found in the forms section of this website.
